My Big 6

I was recently asked about the factors that influence my success at work...so I thought I’d pass them along here:
1. Doing things I enjoy and am relatively good at.
Whether you want to call it playing to your strengths, using your unique ability or playing your best role…I know that for sustained productivity and long-term success I think most of us need to be doing things that energize us rather than drain us.
Sure, even in your Ideal Business you’re probably going to be spending a little bit of your time doing things that you don’t love…but for me, the ratio needs to be a minimum of 80% of my time doing things I enjoy and am good at with a target of 90%.
None of us start at 80%...but with focus and a plan, we can all get there.
2. Working with people I enjoy.
Having a team we enjoy being around.
Spending time with clients that energize us.
Masterminding with like minded, motivated entrepreneurs.
If we’re going to spend at least a couple thousand hours per year in our business…we need to be around people we enjoy.
3. Working in a way I enjoy.
Along those same lines…we need to be using a process we like. We need to be in an environment that we enjoy being in.
That could be the office or the facility you have all the way down to the schedule you follow.
I’ve worked to make my home office an environment I really enjoy being in and I use tools and processes that I like…from the software we use to the planner & calendar system I follow.
4. Having strong ‘whys.’
This is a little ‘deeper’…but I think we all need to have a reason why we do what we do. I know I have a few.
I want to provide both security and opportunity for my family…while working in a way that allows for meaningful time with them.
I want to be a good role model and lead by example…helping them understand that professional success doesn’t mean personal failure.
I want to have a meaningful impact on other people’s lives…not just reach…but, more importantly, depth of impact…helping them create their Ideal Businesses.
While I could expand on that…it at least gives you an idea of my ‘whys.’

5. Keeping things simple.
For me to be successful, I need to simplify things.
Even when what I’m doing looks complicated to others…I’ve simplified it into a few core steps in my own mind. I just can’t work (well) in any other way.
Fewer things better.
Easy to understand.
When the overwhelm of responsibility that comes with trying to be a good dad, spouse, coach, friend & entrepreneur creeps up on me…simplifying is how I get refocused and ready.
6. Using a planning and goal achievement approach that works for me.
I’ve always been a person who writes out my goals and for about 20 years I’ve planned the day the evening prior.
There’s nothing magical about my goal achievement approach or the way I plan…but it works for me…
…and I guess that’s true for all 6 of these.
They work for me…and that’s really the key…finding what works for each of us.
Sure, we can borrow ideas and model things…but we need to adapt them to make them our own.
That’s how we create our own ‘success system.’
We can’t just use someone else’s ‘system’ out of the box and expect the results to be exactly the same for us.
We’re each unique…so adapt accordingly.
So, feel free to use my 6 factors…but adapt them to fit you.
Dedicated to Your Success,
Pat
