My bf is in an MLM. Im afraid I'm too in love to leave though. What do I do?

QUESTION: "What are my options in this situation? My bf is in an MLM (Amway). I am completely against MLMs. He keeps trying to get me to join (he thinks I'm not aware of this. I already said I never would). Im afraid I'm too in love to leave though."

Hi how are you? Yes that's a difficult situation isn't it. I'm sure many couples have faced this same dilemma in life, so you're not alone. I'll try and give you some ideas to help. The first thing you might need to just ask is simply, "is he making actual money each month with it"? And if he is making a healthy net profit, then keep going and support him on it. It could eventually keep growing and make you very wealthy. But I'm assuming your saying this because maybe it's not making any money yet. Maybe you're just spending money on products and it's not actually making him an income, so it seems like he might be wasting time or spinning his wheels. So it's amazing that you care so much to try and assist him in his career path. That's very loving of you.

Here's what I suggest... This is one solution and one option to consider. It would go like this. You both have to seriously think about money, finances and your future career paths. And you need to ensure that he's not wasting time on like a pipe dream. Or at least that he's showing proof that he's making real progress at it.

You sit down with him one evening. You basically say this: “I love you and I support you". "But I want you to succeed in this business. I don’t want you to end up in a situation where you get stuck and not getting ahead.” And say this: “I want you to swear a Salome oath with me, which is that in exactly 1 year from today, you need to be making at least 3,000 usd net profit per month in your Amway business. This will prove to both you and me, that this is the correct business path, and that you’re not wasting time with this”.

So see what he says. If he says, NO WAY. Then you’re in a tough situation. You could just stay and try and see how things go and be supportive as long as you can. Maybe see how it plays out. See how committed he is to making his dreams for success a reality. Then decide later once you have given him some time to actually do the business.

But if he says “YES” to your "agreement", then what you do is you pull out a contract with that info on it, or you say "okay I want us to write this out on paper". (by the way, this is the most important part of this). It's a real contract between you and him. The reason this is important is it will help motivate him. And help him to realize the gravity of the situation. It might help him to try and be more responsible and accoutable also.

Have him sign it and you sign it too. That you’ll support him as he tries to build his Amway business. With that minimal goal as the absolutely ultimatum, that if he doesn’t reach that minimal goal he’ll quit. If he doesn’t quit then you’ll say, “I’ll leave”. See that will hopefully MOTIVATE him to actually stop dabbling in business and start working hard at it!!! As he now has that 3000 goal in mind. Then tell him that if he doesn’t make it, it’s no different than say someone in College not making the grades to keep going (same thing). You have to cut your losses in life sometimes to win.

So if he can't make it work, then he’ll quit, and you’ll then work on finding a different business to start on. (or a different career goal entirely). Doesn’t have to be MLM either. Could be anything. Just something else. The reason i say this is that I know from experience that you might have to try 10–20 things to find one business that works. So he shouldn’t go spinning his wheels for too long. 1 yr is plenty.

Also tell him that you’ll both sit down and re-evaluate the situation monthly. Then also quarterly, you’ll sit down for like the whole day and go over everything in detail, to see if he’s even remotely on track to reaching the 3000 profit goal. If he’s not even close, then he needs to consider leaving earlier even, and you can discuss that option as well with him. You have to do this. Because time is money. And a business has to make money or it’s not even a business. Okay so I hope that helps you. It's "one option". Or something to at least think about. I'm sure you'll figure out what to do. Keep in mind many millionaires have come out of Amway as well. So anything's possible.
