? These books stand out from all those I have read during 2023. It doesn't mean the rest was no good. Often is not about the book itself but how it resonates with us or sparks your interest the moment you read it. I know my 30-year-old version wouldn't care less even about these here. Reading wasn't "my thing" back then. But when the student is ready, the teacher shows up.
From each, I'll jot down one single sentence/excerpt as a highlight. Useless to say, I have no affiliation with the authors or publishers, and this is just sharing and word of mouth.
How the world really works – Vaclav Smil:
"In short, for decades it will be impossible to adequately feed the planet without using fossil fuels as sources of energy and raw materials."
Modern wisdom, ancient roots – Srikumar Rao:
"The only way to be happy is to be happy now. Not tomorrow, not next week, not when you get that promotion or close that deal or find your soul mate. Now”
Atomic Habits – James Clear:
"The first mistake is never the one that ruins you. It is the spiral of repeated mistakes that follows. Missing once is an accident. Missing twice is the start of a new habit."
Homo Deus - Yuval Noah Harari:
"The new longevity and super-human qualities are likely to be the preserve of the techno super-rich, the masters of the data universe. Meanwhile, the redundancy of labor, supplanted by efficient machines, will create an enormous “useless class”, without economic or military purpose."

Freakonomics – Steven Lewitt & Stephen Dubner:
"Morality, it could be argued, represents the way that people would like the world to work, whereas economics represents how it actually does work."
The Future of God – Deepak Chopra:
“To allow God to be God in all his glory, religion shifted blame for evil. It became a human problem., tied in with temptation and sin. God permits evil to exist because we deserve it. We run loose with desire; our aggression makes us attack one another.”
When bad things happen to good people – Harold Kushner:
“One of the things that constantly reassures me that God is real, and not just an idea that religious leaders made up, is the fact that people who pray for strength, hope and courage so often find resources of strength, hope and courage that they did not have before they prayed.”
Rich Dad Poor dada – Robert Kiyosaki:
“When it comes to money, most people want to play it safe and feel secure. So passion does not direct them, fear does. The single most powerful asset we all have is our mind. If it is trained well, it can create enormous wealth.”
