My Annual Goal Setting/Planning System

My Annual Goal Setting/Planning System

As the new year approaches, it's time to start thinking about what we want to achieve in the coming months. Research has shown that successful people often have clear, written goals that outline the steps they need to take to reach their dreams. This is not simply a matter of luck but rather the result of careful planning and determination.

I am sharing my goal-setting framework to help you set and achieve your goals, which has been invaluable in reaching my own objectives. This framework includes four key components from renowned leaders:

  • Setting big, SMARTER goals (Michael Hyatt)
  • Creating a plan using the 3 x 3 x 3 framework (McKinsey)
  • Establishing daily systems and habits to help you make progress toward your goals (James Clear)
  • Identifying what to avoid to stay focused on achieving your goals By following these steps, you can set yourself up for success in the new year and beyond (Nadia Boutaoui)

1. Set big SMARTER Goals:?

These are long-term and ambitious. The SMARTER goal system is a great way to set practical goals. This framework consists of the following steps:

  • Make your goals?specific?and focused. Vague goals can be challenging to work towards, so please be clear about what you hope to achieve.
  • Ensure that your goals are?measurable to?allow you to track your progress and see how close you are to achieving your goals.
  • Make your goals?actionable. Use action verbs to clearly define what you need to do to achieve your goals.
  • Don't be afraid to set?risky?goals that challenge you. It's important to push yourself and strive for something that will require effort and determination.
  • Set?time-bound?goals. Successful goals often have a sense of urgency, so keep yourself motivated by setting deadlines or frequency targets.
  • Make your goals?exciting?and personally motivating. If you are personally invested in your goals, staying motivated when challenges arise will be easier.
  • Ensure that your goals are?relevant?to your values and circumstances. Before committing to your goals, make sure they are realistic and aligned with your current life situation.

2. Make a plan using the 3x3x3 framework:

3x3x3 involves defining:

  • Three goals
  • Over three months and
  • Enlisting three other people to support and hold you accountable for those goals.

You can break your goals into smaller, more manageable tasks and create a schedule or timeline outlining the steps you need to take to get them done. You can also hire a coach or join a support group to help you stay on track.

3. Establish daily systems and habits:

Systems and habits will help you progress toward your goals. Daily systems are routines and habits that assist you in achieving your short-term goals daily.

"You do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems." - James Clear.

Find ways to stay motivated and celebrate your successes along the way. Be flexible and adjust your goals or plan as needed, as life is unpredictable, and you may need to adapt to changing circumstances.

4. Things to avoid to stay focused on achieving your goals:

To achieve goals knowing what not to do is very important. These include:

  • Procrastination: Putting off tasks that seem difficult or time-consuming will make it harder to start. You can break your goals into smaller tasks and create a schedule to stay on track.
  • Multitasking: Focusing on one task at a time will help you be more productive.
  • Distractions: Social media, email, and phone notifications can disrupt focus. You can set aside dedicated time for checking these things or use tools to block distractions when you need to work.
  • Negative self-talk: Don't let negative thoughts undermine your confidence and motivation. Focus on your strengths and progress made towards your goals.
  • Perfectionism: Strive for progress, not perfection. It's okay to make mistakes.

I hope this goal-setting framework is helpful as you work towards your goals in the new year. Remember to celebrate your achievements along the way, be bold, and adjust your goals or plan as needed.
