My Alternative Spring Break Experience
Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a service learning program that sends over 1000 Howard University students to sites internationally and domestically to relieve any issues in the community.
Alternative Spring Break was such a beautiful and challenging experience. I was pushed out of my comfort zone and learned more about myself. For ASB 2019, I had the honor of serving Flint, MI. The initiative for Flint was environmental injustice and illiteracy. While I was there I packed food, delivered water, and spoke to elementary school children. I saw the difference my team and I were making immediately. When I spoke 1 on 1 to the children in their classrooms and let them vent, I realized how passionate I was about service. I realized how much I had to offer to the youth and how happy it made me. I found that service is where true joy lies. I was so blessed to be a part of something bigger than myself.
I continued to work with Alternative Spring Break by joining their Steering Committee as an Events Coordinator. I have helped plan the Team Leader Retreats, Participant Meetings, a Sip N’ Paint event, open discussions, and team bonding. In March, I will be serving in Puerto Rico for ASB 2020 where I am tackling the initiative of youth empowerment and restoration.
