My advice for students searching for internship/full-time opportunities.
As the Spring semester approaches for college students so does "crunch time" for students to find internships and full time opportunities. I am no pro by any means at obtaining the perfect opportunity, but I do have some valuable tips for undergrads currently searching;
1. Relax, you're already ahead of most college students by taking the initiative to set aside time in your day to fill out job applications.
2. Your resume; make sure your resume isn't full of regular tasks, but filled with accomplishments. Example. "Exceeded quota in all four quarters by consistently developing new prospecting strategies and following up with potential clients in a professional manner."
Recruiters are looking for individuals that have a proven track record of going above and beyond. Listing out regular job duties will quickly lose the reader's attention.
3. Identify what you're actually passionate about and this may be the hardest part. A ton of people develop a misunderstanding that the role they need to obtain needs to be in accordance to their current area of study. Instead, write down what activities you enjoy or what set of skills make you unique from everyone else and then relate that to a potential role in a company. Recruiters will quickly find out if you applied just for the heck of it so make sure your skills relate to the role you're applying for.
4. Leverage LinkedIn!!! You've maybe already applied on the company website, don't be afraid to search the company on LinkedIn and send a short message to someone who works there, "Hi Tim Smith, my name is Molly Myers and I'm currently a student at Ohio University. I noticed you work for company XYZ and was wondering if I could chat with you for 10-15 minutes regarding your experience there if possible."
This will show you have initiative, confidence, and you're doing your due diligence in finding out as much as possible about the company you're interested in. Don't be afraid to ask them if they could connect you with a recruiter at the end of your conversation if it sounds like a company you're interested in.
These are a just few tips to get your foot in the door which can usually prove to be the most difficult part of securing an opportunity.
