If the plan doesn’t work, change it!
Was 2019 a job hunting disappointment? Well, if so, change your plan, don't not change your goal just change the way you are going about trying to achieve it.
No matter what, always remember a little bit of progress each day adds up to a big achievement. Approaching your job search strategically will require a lot more work on your part but at least you will see some of the fruits of your efforts.
So, if in 2019 you relentlessly emailed your CV out to every hiring manager you could find with a cut and paste message and you were met with dead silence then it’s time to try something new.
HERE ARE MY TIPS:
1. RESEARCH - HAVE A TARGET LIST OF EMPLOYERS (SellAnyCar First on YOUR LIST)
This is absolutely crucial: there’s a lot of research involved in a job search. There are going to be companies that are night right for you so identify them, target the ‘right’ employers that match you.
2. NETWORK - WORK YOUR WAY INTO THOSE ORGANISATIONS.
Use LinkedIn and/or any other networking opportunity or social media channel that you can think of. Network with people outside of your professional industry because the chances are that it’s one of that person’s friends or acquaintances who will most widen your network. Meet as many new people as you can, maybe even set yourself a target of say 3 new contacts each week or whatever seems attainable for you.
3. GET A BRAND - DEVELOP YOUR PROFESSIONAL BRAND.
"Your smile is your logo and your personality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after they’ve had an experience with you becomes your trademark" - Jay Danzie. I know some are tired of me harping on about 'professional branding' but it’s necessary in today’s social media arena. Google yourself and be sure you are comfortable with what you find because this is how you’ll be perceived.
4. PITCH - PERFECT YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH
Be sure you know your pitch inside and out and know how to adapt it quickly to whomever you meet. You only have seconds to make an impression on someone so make sure you get this down to an art.
5. VOLUNTEER - FIND A CHARITY OR ORGANISATION TO WORK WITH.
Find one whose goals are in line with your personal values. Volunteering is a terrific way to find a sense of purpose and identity, whilst helping others and opening doors to more job opportunities.
6. BE POSITIVE - AVOID NEGATIVE PEOPLE WHERE POSSIBLE.
While you’re in transition positivity is so important so you must manage to stay upbeat, confident and hopeful. People hire confident, happy, positive, ’can do’, candidates. No one likes to hire, negative, downer candidates who always have something negative to say. Ultimately, who your spend time with impacts your attitude. Every job seeker I’ve ever come across has had times of depression but being positive in a negative situation is not na?ve, it’s a leadership qiality.Don’t make this harder on yourself by associating with ‘mood hoovers’, associate with people who build you up, not bring you down.
Remember you are capable of amazing things.
