My 5 Whys Technique

My 5 Whys Technique

Helping employees to get a better understanding of where they need to improve, so they can decide on and take the right actions.

I am in the process of completing a 360 Degree Peer to Peer Review with a group of engineers and administration in a very successful business. This business is always looking at opportunities to improve and grow for their business and their team members.

The '5 Whys' is a technique where you ask 'why?' 5 times to improve your understanding of a specific problem / area for improvement.

I recommend that employees (and their supporting manager/coach) use this technique on the 2-3 areas that they are focusing on improving.

In doing so, they can:

  • Identify the root cause(s) for each area needing improvement
  • Plan actions that will make a real difference to their development.

 Use probing questions

Why do you think...

Why’s that...

Why don’t you feel...

In fact this technique can be used in many circumstances to drill down to the real issue.
