My 3 keys to having energy
James Davies
I show career-driven parents how prioritise themselves so they can lose weight and improve their health & fitness for better performance at work and home ? Improved Performance with a Health-First Approach
As you might expect exercise and a healthy diet are important to me
I make my living talking about it and sharing what I know with people
However, it hasn't always been a top priority for me
Maybe it's wrong to say it hasn't always been a top priority so let's just say I haven't in the past always practised what I preach
And when I don't.... I suffer
My work suffers
My home life suffers
My energy levels are low and it becomes a cycle
I eat food that gives me a quick energy boost (usually caffeine and chocolate)
And round it goes
When my exercise and food are good.... everything is usually good
I'm more productive at work which leads to me being more fulfilled and feeling successful
I have the energy to spend on the things I enjoy doing and more importantly to dedicate the time and energy to my family that they deserve
For me, the key is to have the following three things happening regularly
- Exercise
- A sensible diet
- Alcohol-free days
Without these three things in place, the rest of my life suffers
So I make it a priority to do these three things often
Exercise
I make sure I get in a minimum of three lots of exercise per week. Any less than that and I feel a drop in energy. I also know that the more I exercise and move the better I feel
I even have my own PT to help me with this!
A Sensible Diet
I love food, especially food that is "bad" for me. The less I eat of it and the more I focus on "healthy" food. (I could replace bad with processed and healthy with whole or single ingredient)
And I'm by no means perfect. I'm never going to have 6 pack abs but I know if I the balance correct I feel energised and when it's not quite right I feel lethargic
Another key for diet is to make sure I am drinking enough water. You won't believe how much a difference this makes to me
Alcohol-Free Days
It's a no brainer. The more I have in a week the better I feel and the less likely I am to reach for bad food or put off a workout
I'm not a heavy drinker but do enjoy a beer and find the less often I drink the more I enjoy it
In addition to these three things, a recent discovery for me is journaling
I never put much stock in it before but find that if I use my journal to reflect on what's working, what I have learned and what I am grateful for life seems a little better
I don't want/need any of these things to be perfect. Just in place more often than not. And when they are life seems to be much better than when the balance is the other way around.
After all good enough is good enough
Keep moving
