How my 25 year old "me" would love to experience his onboarding process in his first job.

My first day was amazing, my colleague Jane said to me: "This is your new professional home, you can always sit where you can work best." It was like arriving at my new apartment. On the same day I got to know 20 different colleagues who presented their projects to me. Everyone wanted me to join their teams. It was my job to choose three of them for my first quarter.
On my second day, I took part in a purpose workshop. Together with 15 other colleagues from 10 different countries, I worked out how my personal purpose can support that of my new company.
On my third day, I answered many questionnaires and had conversations. A personal training program for year one was developed from the analysis of these sessions, the application process and my career so far. For me these are courses in "Active Listening", "Conflict Management", "Machine Learning for Marketing" and "Servant Leadership".
On day 4, the 15 newcomers spent a whole day with 15 Top Managers of the company. Among other things, I had 15 conversations (one on ones) and heard some interesting lectures. In the evening we were matched to 15 pairs to support each other for one year as "peer to peer" coaches.
I was an “executive” from day 5 on and was immediately responsible for my own project. My supervisor told me that he was not my boss but my coach.
After a year I got an evaluation of how much time I spent in which place in the office and where my personal well-being is best (body data and AI). That was voluntary, but now I know where I can best do deep work sessions, where I am most creative in the group and which meeting rooms suit me.
After 2 years I asked myself why I felt so comfortable in my new company. The answer is simple. The entrepreneurs live their purpose every day. The office has a clear idea and the colleagues feel safe, motivated and empowered. I didn't think I'd ever arrive at such a place.
These thoughts are part of the second #WorkLeadSpace workshop, a collaborative project launched by VITRA and Accenture. This exercise took me 10 minutes. If my 25-year-old "me" can draw this kind of picture of the future, what can we all do together?
How do you see the on-boarding process of the future?
And what if I tell you that work is actually going to be fun? On the mission to change the way we think Work, Leadership & Space for good!
4 年Thanks for sharing Michael, I find it really fascinating how clear we can actually articulate our desires for a new work experience provided we give us some room and space to contemplate (as you said, you developed this scenario within 10 min!). So after becoming aware, what do you think are the prerequisites for making this come true?

4 年Thanks for sharing! I really like this creative approach. I would add in this on-boarding process: how to get to know your team/colleagues where many/some will work from home. I believe this will be the new standard for many companies and then the on-boarding might get more difficult to get everyone together physically. Would it suffice to do it virtually?! I have no idea myself.
