My 2018 New Year’s Resolution for Betterment

My 2018 New Year’s Resolution for Betterment

Heading into this new year, I wrote a resolution for myself and to my team at Betterment. For me, it was an opportunity to reflect on both my personal life and my role leading Betterment, and it was important to me to share my hopes and commitments for 2018.

A few people on the team encouraged me to publish it for our customers, so I decided to share it here. From all of us at Betterment, we wish you a very happy new year.

As a leader, my resolution is to increasingly channel our customers.

Team,

I’m excited for the holidays, a time to relax with family, reflect on 2017, and prepare for 2018. This year we spent Christmas at Grandma’s in McConnellsville, N.Y., followed by skiing over New Year’s at Mt Peter, N.Y.

There’s little I love more than a good challenge, and 2017 brought ample. I’m settling into fatherhood, which is tougher and more rewarding with two kids than with one, and pushing myself to be the best CEO for Betterment, which is tougher and more rewarding as the company scales. In 2018, I’m resolved to up my game at both.

As a father, my goal for the year is to share new experiences with the girls. In 2017, we traveled plenty—to Europe twice and around the world in two weeks, testing our limits with two kids under age three. This year, I look forward to taking the girls skiing, skating, and camping (with the new sleeping bags Santa brought), introducing these city kids to the joys of the outdoors.

As a leader, my resolution is to increasingly channel our customers. We talk about our customers all the time, but how do we consistently make better decisions as a result of what they’re telling us? I want to amplify their voices via analytics, research, and everyday human interactions, broadcast smartly. There’s so much we want to do for customers: understand them holistically, personalize for them, guide them to better outcomes. We’ll do it all best when we’re listening well.

I’m grateful for my lovely family and for the incredible team we've assembled at Betterment. Here’s to a Happy New Year of great experiences, listening well, and getting better every day.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year, and love to all,

Jon and fam.

Jon, your customer focus is very consistent in the design of the product, marketing, presentation, and even with the action of the financial planners. Thanks for sharing your goal with us!
