My 2018 Iceberg: Year in Review
Cara North
Learning & Development Leader, Speaker, & Author of Learning Experience Design Essentials
Before I share all of the great things that happened to me in 2018, I want to share the idea of the success iceberg . It's important to know that while I had an amazing 2018, I certainly had a lot of weight under my iceberg this year that I will also share in a seperate article.
2018 Was About Experiences
- It was when I finally met Brent and Luis from TLDC
- It was laughing so hard I was on the verge of tears during a L&D D&D session led by the amazing Matt Pierce.
- Bouncing up and down like Tigger when I got my first paid speaking gig for a Columbus area conference.
- It was running down the hall at the University of Utah to give Myra Roldan a hug
- Meeting Dr Michael Allen in Utah to only see him again a few months later at The Ohio State University. He did a program for the Central Ohio ATD Chapter and gave me a hug.
- It was laughing so hard I cried when I saw the National Lotto signs in England and my delight to get a picture with a sign.
- It was meeting Jo Cook and blowing out birthday candles with her in London at TLDCUK (TLDCUK was probably one of my favorite events of the year, to see what you missed, check out this awesome video created by Jayne and Kevin Davids)
- It was going with Bethany Taylor to meet Donald Taylor in London for tea and scones
- It was sharing a pizza with Bethany Taylor in Amsterdam
- It was packing up my office to work for a new department at The Ohio State University
- Hosting the amazing Jac Hutchinson and talented Kim Lindsey in my home :)
- Introducing the almighty Mike Taylor as the keynote speaker at the Central Ohio ATD conference (in case you didn't know I'm a huge Mike Taylor fan :D)
- It was eating BBQ with Clark Quinn in Kansas City
No pun intended, but that is just the TIP of the iceberg.
This year has been nothing short of amazing and I'm so thankful for all the amazing people I've been able to meet, laugh with, and cultivate friendships. I've learned this year that our profession is SO small. It may not feel like it but the deeper you get in, the smaller it becomes. Here are some of the other highlights from 2018:
Academic Achievements:
I'm fortunate to be able to pursue my PhD in Learning Technologies while also working full-time at The Ohio State University. This time last year if you asked me what I wanted to do with my degree, I would have told you that I wanted to be a consultant. While that may still be a possibility, this year (as in a few months ago), I've decided to focus on the "academic" game. In other words, 2019 will be the year of publishing. I did set some nice groundwork for it this year by doing some service projects and by getting two publications:
Correia, A.-P., North, C. A., Korkmaz, C., Simmerman, V. E. & Bruce Wallace, K. A. (in press). Authentic Online Discussions: A Narrative Inquiry into Sharing Leadership and Facilitation Among Teachers and Students. International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL)
Leach, A., North, C.A., Gintert, N., Correia, A-P., Archambault, L. A Portrait of a Modern Online Graduate Student. In M. Simonson (ed) 41th Annual Proceedings of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. Bloomington, IN: Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT).
Also, I had the opportunity to assist with two graduate level instructional design classes at The Ohio State University and I was asked to be a guest speaker for Dr Lynn Lease's instructional design course at Franklin University. For 2019, I hope to assist with the Multimedia Principles course and maybe a Workforce Development course.
Fall 2018. Introduction to Instructional Design, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Served as Practitioner mentor under Dr Tracy McKell-Stuckey.
October 2018. Guest speaker for Instructional Design and Learning course. Franklin University, Columbus, Ohio. Invited by Dr Lynn Lease.
Spring 2018. Applied Instructional Design, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Served as a Practitioner mentor under Dr Ana-Paula Correia.

Service
To me, I'm most proud of being able to serve and help others and I'm glad in 2018 to have the opportunity to mentor and assist emerging professionals. If you are reading this and haven't met me, I encourage you to send me a DM (as long as you don't try to sell me anything). I'll help you anyway that I can including resume help, connections, or general advice. In addition to personal service, here are some of the ways I gave back in 2018:
December 2018. Evaluator for Designers for Learning. Evaluation Sprint project. Supervised by Jennifer Maddrell.
October 2018. Judge for the eLearning Learning MVP Awards. https://www.elearninglearning.com/pages/mvp-awards-2018/
January 2018. Data collector for research study: Impact of Art Museum Programs on K-12 Students. Supervisor Erin Wilcox from Randi Korn and Associates. Full report found here: https://www.arteducators.org/research/articles/377-naea-aamd-research-study-impact-of-art-museum-programs-on-k-12-students
Leadership
In 2019, I will be President of Central Ohio ATD. It is exciting and scary. Some of the changes I want to implement include having more service opportunities such as clothing/food drives and to have an emerging professional showcase. I have a lot of ideas but I realize it's not pragmatic to try to achieve everything in a year. Due to this large committment, I likely won't be as involved in other organizations as I have in the past.
Media
2018 was a busy year for me in podcasting and TLDC. While I have my own podcast with Joe Suarez (I mean actually it's his podcast and he lets me sort of claim it haha), it was great to be a part of other podcasts including The Lounge, Training Journal & TelTales. One of my favorite TLDCasts I hosted would have to be the one where Mel Milloway shared one of her xAPI projects.
A close second would have to be the instructional design playlist.
A huge thank you again to all of the wonderful folks who were a part of it including Clark Quinn, Debbie Richards, Myra Roldan, Sean Hickey, Trish Uhl, Dawn Snyder, Matt Sustaita, and Roberta Dombrowski
Also this Periscope from Jo still makes me smile. I can still feel the wind off of that fast moving train :)
L&D Hall of Fame
I added to my elite L&D photo collection in 2018 :)
Brent, Joe, Anna, and Bethany
Dr Michael Allen
Myra Roldan and Anna Leach
Mary Cropp
Debbie Richards (seriously, is there anyone in L&D nicer than this wonderful woman?!)
Jo Cook and James McLuckie
Jac Hutchinson, Mike Taylor, Joe Suarez, and Kim Lindsey
Just for fun, two other pics. This summer in Salt Lake, my husband and I found the Joseph Smith sphinx and had to get a selfie with him
Also, while Chicago has The Bean and Denver has The Bear, did you know Columbus has the selfie? This year, I added my face to the growing number in the "As We Are" sculpture
Compare this to my last year in review and it looks like some of the things I missed was visiting Scotland and writing a book about educational technology. Instead I went to England and I was apart of this book. In 2019, I hope to continue to pay it forward :)
