My 1st DG Annual Press Conference

My 1st DG Annual Press Conference

The DG yearly press conference is an ESA tradition. This was my 1st as DG, & I appreciate very much the participation from the Media, thank you. Below you can find a list of my main takeaways, or scroll down for the slides and replay of the full conference.

1/From 23k+ applicants, we are now down to 1.3k candidates for the astronaut selection, aiming to finalize 4-6 career ESA astronauts by the end of 2022. The astronauts with a physical disability project is proceeding in parallel, with 29 candidates in consideration.

2/We are on track with ROSCOSMOS for #ExoMars launch in Sept. The ESA Rosalind Franklin Rover has had months of successful testing, with minor tuning left to complete this month. Following a final review in March, it will move to the launch site in April. Read Steady driving towards ExoMars launch for the latest.

3/Sentinel-1B anomaly inquiry continues; the satellite remains under control with no collision risks foreseen. Sentinel-1A is functioning nominally. 1C/-1D progress well, both being in an advanced integration phase, with launch dates yet to be defined. ESA and the European Commission have started to identify solutions to address the related data gap. In parallel, the S1A observation plan will be adapted to cover relevant areas of interest to Copernicus services, public authorities & Sentinel-1 data users in general.

4/The central core of ESA's new generation launch vehicle has arrived in Kourou enabling for combined tests at the European Space Port where Ariane 6 parts will come together on the launch pad for the first time. Read Ariane 6 central core reaches Europe's Spaceport for more info.

5/The 1st MTG will launch in Q4. 40 million+ observations are processed a day for weather forecasting; 95% come from satellites. The socio-economic benefits of accurate weather forecasting is up to €61 billion/year. MTG will enhance these observations; this is a big milestone.

6/ESA's first European Service Module (ESM) on NASA Artemis' first Orion mission, is ready and is currently scheduled for a March launch. ESA is indisputably NASA’s #1 partner on Artemis. Exciting times to come!

6/Lastly, I spoke on the upcoming #SpaceSummit and my expectations of a political kick-off of a more ambitious Europe in space to serve our citizens, to create economic opportunities and unite Europeans behind grand ideas – the Accelerators & Inspirators .

Thank you for sharing this insightful presentation. Open talk about a stuck in space exploration in Europe Union gives a hope to change the situation in the upcoming years. It is so disappointing to read about only 6 of 23K applicants is planned to be astronaut. It seems the advertising campaign were more expensive than the next training budget :-(. As well the budgets gap between NASA and ESA impresses. But that is not only difference between America and Europe approach. European taxpayers have a strong ground for a doubts - for example, when they face the recent EUMETSAT training course of AI for EO, which is a total shame. Looking videos with a man staring on a monitor, woman clicking a mouse, flying letters like in the matrix movie the and 25 logos of organizations affiliated with EAS in every! video, you will think: what kind of spaces they spend my money for!? Because, if you want learn AI, you just open Andrew Ng's Coursera and his famous AI course which already 1 million students has passed. And Andrew Ng made his course, recording videos during the evenings after work! Feel the difference.
