Embrace the Seasons and Cycles of Your Life

By?Seth Streeter,?MS, CFP?, CDFA?

Chief Impact Officer?and Founder

"Embrace the seasons and cycles of your life. There is magic in change."?- Bronnie Ware?

"Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been."??- David Bowie?

Summer has officially arrived. Students are enjoying time out of school, families are taking long-anticipated vacations, and hot weather has descended upon us.?

For many of us, our expectations for each season become familiar. We look forward to the unique activities, sights, and aromas that each season affords. Summers may be?for gardening, picnics, flowers, or beach visits. The fall may bring the return of the school year, autumn colors,?and the NFL season. The winter holds the holidays, making soup at home, and mountain resort vacation destinations.?

As individuals, we?have our own seasons of life as well. However, unlike the Earth’s four seasons, many of us experience new things as we approach new?seasons of life. We know these cycles?are predictable because we see those before us going through them. Yet it is our first experience with these?seasons that?makes them real to us.??

Someone may tell us about adolescence, parenting, or aging, but until we experience it ourselves, we cannot fully know.?It is when we look back in time that we can appreciate the lessons and experiences these life seasons provided us. This is how wisdom is gained and where maintaining the right mindset becomes most valuable.??

You may have heard about mindsets, specifically a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when we try to prove ourselves by winning, and a growth mindset is when we focus on learning over winning. As we age, our sandbox gets smaller if we stop playing the games we cannot win anymore.?Embracing a growth mindset allows us to expand our perspectives and learn how to enjoy life more fully, and in unique ways.?

We are fortunate to have a world-renowned growth mindset expert,?Eduardo Briceno,?who has shared the latest research on?how we can improve our mindset for aging at our latest?INSPIREDtalk. A replay is available?for those who could not attend the live session. Together, we can gain tools and insights for how we can best prepare for the season of life we are currently in and the?season ahead.?

Two of my favorite questions are, “What advice would you give to your younger self?” and, “What advice would your older self give you today?”?The answers to these questions can help illuminate the things in our lives that truly matter most. Here is to us heeding this self-counsel as we plan our years ahead!?Please share these insights with your Mission Wealth advisors so we can help empower your dreams into reality.?

Client Corner: Intra-Family Loans

By?Brandon Baiamonte,?MS, CPA, CFE, CFM

Director of Tax Strategy

Do you have a family member who needs money for one of the following reasons?

  • To buy a home
  • To start or grow a business
  • To purchase an investment
  • To buy a car or pay off credit card debt.

You may have considered loaning money to that family member. There are several advantages of loaning money to your loved one instead of your family member obtaining a third-party loan outright. These advantages include:

  • The interest rate for a family loan is usually less than prevailing market rates
  • Interest payments aren’t made to banks or other lenders. This keeps the interest “in the family”
  • It may be the only source of funding for family members with no credit or poor credit
  • Additional closing costs or other loan fees can be avoided
  • Wealth can be transferred without gift tax implications if the acquired asset appreciates in value.

However, there are also a few questions to think about before offering a family member a loan, and some important tax and income considerations to discuss.?

To learn more,?visit our blog?as our Director of Tax Strategy, Brandon Baiamonte, breaks down what advantages intra-family loans can have, and how you can most effectively plan and execute them.

Family loans can be a great tool, but it's important to be aware of and follow the rules to avoid IRS scrutiny. Please reach out to your client advisor at Mission Wealth for more information. As always, it's prudent to also discuss any tax consequences with your CPA.
