As of late my mind keeps drifting to the power of mutual respect. Respect is a behavior and action that treats people well. We show respect by being polite and kind to people. Insulting and treating people badly are behaviors that lack respect. The practice of mutual respect is an essential building block for the foundation of a well functioning civilized society. We have to give respect in order to receive it. The practice of mutual respect establishes trust and defuses conflicts. We learn the basic social guidelines for respect as children. I leaned two significant life lessons from My Mother that taught me the power of mutual respect to transform any situation or relationship. First, always see similarities with people and respect differences. Second, Her golden rule ,“If you do not have something nice to say about another person. Say nothing at all.” These two simple behaviors easily practiced taught me that Mutual Respect is the perfect starting point to resolves differences, build bridges and produce successful outcomes.
