A “Must See” Visitor at Table Bay Harbour

On the 2nd of July, two Japanese warships, the JS Kashima and JS Shimakaze arrived in Cape Town. This is a historical occasion, as since the founding of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force shortly after World War 2, no such visit has been made.

This trip forms part of the vessels’ Overseas Training Cruise of 2024 and aims to equip the over 180 graduates of the General Officers Course, some on-the-job training and first-hand experience within a foreign country. The cruise places emphasis on developing global awareness through joint exercises between countries. The South African Navy has expressed excitement over the new visitors’ arrival.

Upon their entry into South African waters the JS Kashima fired a 21-gun salute. This is an old maritime tradition, whereby the firing of canons symbolises the vessel’s peaceful intentions. Upon a foreign vessel entering another state’s waters, they would unload all their weaponry to show their non-threatening intentions. This practise is now seen as a sign of respect.

The public has been invited to? view these warships which will be open to the public on the 4th of July at 10am in the V&A Waterfront.
