A MUST-READ FOR THOSE TRUCKERS AND OTTAWA CITIZENS WHO LOVE DEMOCRACY

THIS IS A SHORT BOOK REVIEW.

TIMOTHY SNYDER is a modern history Professor at Yale University.

He has spent considerable time studying the development of Tyrannies. His writings are objective and transparent.

The book is small, only 120 pages and about 4" by 6", but a must-read for anyone who throws around the words dictator or 'tyrannist.' It shows the danger signs and how we can quickly evolve into autocracy and dictatorships. It's easier than you think. Both Ottawa Citizens and Truckers will find value here.

He notes Hamlet's words, "The time is out of joint......Oh cursed spite, that I was ever born to set it right". Those words are as valid today as they were in Shakespeare's time with Covid, Wars, Mass Migration and Climate Issues. It could be a foundation for any intellectual discussion of where we are going.

One could also argue tyranny is not trying to stamp out what you disagree with in a free society. I walked through the trucker protest at least half a dozen times, to actually see what was going on without buying into biased journalism. The vast majority were well behaved and the PM should have engaged with them to see for himself. I can clearly see why someone would disagree with them, but they have a democratic right to protest. The occupation is a different story and that was enabled by very poor political leadership from the Mayor and the PM. The only one who acted quickly was Ford. Had Trudeau not insulted them, spoke with them and then told them they have 3 days to clear out, it would have very likely worked. He then could have called in the RCMP and the military. Yes, many of their view are skewed but so is Trudeau’s. Many professors, like bureaucrats, tned to be more left leaning. It is hard to trust academic sources as “unbiased” these days. The trucker protest was a clash caused by the polarization of Trudeau’s somewhat autocratic approach and the right wing leaning extremes of the truckers protesting along with the mismanagement of Covid policy which was somewhat dracionian in itself.
