How Employers Can Support Workers With ADHD
领英推荐
As mentioned in our 5 News Stories roundup, people with disabilities are less likely to be employed than those without disabilities, more likely to work in service, production, transportation and material moving occupations, and less likely to work in management, professional and related occupations.
In a recent interview with DiversityInc's Linda Bell, John Stenger, Senior Manager of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the National Organization on Disability , spoke about their ADHD diagnosis and how it has affected their career.
Stenger also discussed how they got to their role at NOD and ways employers can support workers with ADHD and other neurodivergent employees.
Stenger suggests that education and awareness are key methods companies can use to establish an inclusive culture for workers who are neurodiverse. One way to start is by introducing all employees to ADHD, its potential impact on individuals and some typical symptoms.
Companies can provide resources via their intranet and wellness programs, such as sensitivity training, communication strategies and dispelling myths and misunderstandings. According to the NOD's 2022 Employer Tracker, nearly half of the companies surveyed require their managers and supervisors to receive disability training on an annual basis.
“Companies are getting better and introducing more training for awareness,” Stenger said. “HR departments are becoming more flexible. Accommodation processes are getting easier. What I love is that over time, especially with the pandemic, awareness of ADHD has taken off.”?
