Metadata is structured reference data that helps to sort and identify attributes of the information it describes. In other words, metadata is data that describes other data. As it summarizes basic information about data, metadata is a crucial component of data management and sits at the core of any data analytics program, AI, dashboard and overall data project and product. Metadata makes it easier to find, use and reuse particular instances of data, and provides the context and details to better extract information out of the data.

But metadata management is often handled off the side of someone desks, with bits and pieces of metadata being recorded in documents, code comments, emails and if you're lucky some somewhat structured Excel files. But metadata needs dedicated resources, and specific artifacts to hold it. Most importantly the following three:

1. Business Glossary: A collection of business terms with their unique definitions and other useful related information.
2. Data Dictionary: A repository of information about data that provides the description of a data element and its metadata.
3. Data Catalog: An enterprise-wide asset providing a single reference source for the location of any data set required for varying needs.
