A must have for every new CEO

According to Russell Reynolds “CEO Turnover Index”, 88% of the 180 CEO appointments tracked by their Index in 2023 are first time CEO’s.? ?Another article by HRD Australia states that 63% of the share of global CEO appointments were internal promotions.

In my own portfolio of companies, past and present, I have seen a similar proportion of CEO’s being appointed internally and becoming CEOs for the first time. ?There are many benefits that arise from internally appointed CEO’s and there is also evidence that they achieve longer tenure than external appointments.?

The high proportion of “first-time” CEOs creates great potential for different styles of leadership to emerge with the ability to create high performing cultures that will attract the best possible talent to drive the business forward sustainably.?

In the CEO Toolkit created by Kristina Rivers and myself we provide a checklist for the “Role of the CEO” to offer the clarity needed to kick-start your new CEO role.
