Well, hold onto your seats because this week has been a whirlwind of tech happenings!
Here’s what I’ll be covering today:
Latest in the world of AI:?
1] Big News!! Elon Musk reveals GrokAI as OpenAI competitor
Grok is an AI modeled after The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask! It has been built by Musk’s new AI company, xAI.
Grok, which is in early testing and not available to the general public, would ultimately be released to subscribers to X’s top-tier subscription service, Premium+.
But the most interesting part is that Grok AI Users can multi-task across coding and language and if rumours are to be true, Elon Musk has procured 1000s of GPUs to power xAI. WHOA!!
2] China aims to build advanced humanoid robots by 2025
The Chinese government has released plans detailing the country’s ambitions to lead the global market in humanoid robotics by 2025. That's 2 years from now. That's it!
The plan includes breakthroughs in the “brain, cerebellum, and limbs” of robots.
Also, by 2027, they also want to improve the technological/innovative capabilities of humanoid robots—earmarking them as a new engine for economic growth (China’s expected market share in the global humanoid robot market is forecasted to be worth $51.4B by 2030).
3] World leaders meet at AI Safty Summit in the UK
This week, UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, held an AI Safety Summit attended by global leaders to discuss the way forward.
The headline development from the two-day summit was 28 nations signing the Bletchley Declaration, which establishes a shared understanding of the risks associated with frontier AI.
A non-binding agreement from AI industry leaders to submit new models for independent safety tests was one of the few other concrete developments from the AI summit.
I was invited to attend some of the fringe events where I found some very interesting insights! More on that for later :)
Latest in the world of Social Media:
4] Meta is looking to offer an ad-free subscription in Europe
It had been rumoured for a while, and now, we have official confirmation that Meta will indeed be offering subscription-based, ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram. But only to EU users.
As part of its compliance with evolving privacy regulations in the EU, Meta’s looking to essentially side-step the new GDPR requirements by providing all users with an option to opt-out of all ads, and related data tracking. For a fee.
As per Meta:
“To comply with evolving European regulations, we are introducing a new subscription option in the EU, EEA and Switzerland. In November, we will be offering people who use Facebook or Instagram and reside in these regions the choice to continue using these personalized services for free with ads, or subscribe to stop seeing ads. While people are subscribed, their information will not be used for ads.”
5] X/ Twitter, is rolling out an option to make audio and video calls
Are you ready to take calls from your Twitter followers?
领英推荐
Yes, Elon Musk’s X is branching out beyond the humble tweet to let you actually ring someone up.
Twitter/X has started rolling out support for audio and video calls, something that Elon Musk had teased back in August.
This feature presents a direct challenge to social media giant Meta / WhatsApp which currently dominates the audio-video calling market.
When opening the mobile app, you may see a pop-up screen informing you about the new audio/video calling capabilities, but you can turn them off immediately.
As of today, you need to have a Premium subscription to call other users, but everyone on the platform is able to receive calls. However, Premium users can only call users who have already sent them a Direct Message at least once before.
6] LinkedIn has reached 1 BILLION members and adds AI features for job seekers
LinkedIn has reached a whopping 1 billion users. The platform will now offer some of its premium subscribers the ability to use the new AI feature to speed up the job search process.
So rather than looking at individual job postings, the new feature will use information on users’ feeds and suggest opportunities based on the information in their profile.
That's all on the updates! But I don't want you to passively consume these updates. I would encourage you to try AI tools and learn how to best use them.
