Musings of a Security Consultant: Finding Balance Amidst Life's Next Attack?
"Old paint on a canvas, as it ages, sometimes becomes transparent. When that happens it is possible, in some pictures, to see the original lines: a tree will show through a woman's dress, a child makes way for a dog, a large boat is no longer on an open sea. That is called pentimento because the painter 'repented,' changed his mind. Perhaps it would be as well to say that the old conception, replaced by a later choice, is a way of seeing and then seeing again. That is all I mean about the people in this book. The paint has aged and I wanted to see what was there for me once, what is there for me now."
Lillian Hellman's profound words on the evolution of a canvas, the revelation of hidden layers, and the art of seeing anew struck a chord with me this summer. As a security consultant immersed in the ever-changing landscape of cybersecurity, these words encapsulate the essence of my journey—a journey of rediscovery, balance, and the pursuit of deeper insights.
In the realm of cybersecurity consulting, each day unfolds with its unique challenges and complexities. Whether it's dissecting vulnerabilities through red team exercises, constructing vigilant security operations centers, or orchestrating rapid responses to digital threats, the relentless pace often obscures the underlying patterns. It's akin to the layers of an artwork—each brushstroke, a unique incident; each stroke of color, a security measure; and beneath it all, the original lines of defense strategies.
Family has always been my anchor, providing perspective amid the whirlwind of professional demands. This summer marked significant family milestones—the beginning of my daughter's pre-K journey and the imminent tenth birthday of my son. These moments served as a reminder that, just like a canvas, life has its layers. Each phase reveals a new dimension, and it's our privilege to witness and embrace them.
But it wasn't only in the realm of family that I uncovered hidden layers. I've always been a fan of the arts, particularly jazz. This summer, I unexpectedly decided to dive back into my curiosity for the arts—a world of rhythm, harmony, and creativity. Just as the layers of old paint give way to the original lines, I rediscovered the joy of simply listening and appreciating the beauty that artists create.
In cybersecurity, there's an art to defending against ever-evolving threats. It's like jazz—a continuous improvisation. Jazz musicians riff off each other's energy, creating something new and unique in each performance. Similarly, in cybersecurity, professionals must collaborate, adapt, and innovate to stay ahead of digital adversaries.
My journey into appreciating the arts began as I sought a way to recharge and find inspiration outside the world of cybersecurity. This summer, I rekindled my relationship with literature, starting with T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land." It was a literary journey that, quite unexpectedly, led me to the captivating works of Lillian Hellman. There, I discovered the interplay between literature and life, each offering unique perspectives.

Amidst the pages of books and the notes of music, I also allowed myself to rediscover the joys of life beyond office walls—festivals, concerts, and art galleries. These moments served as a backdrop for my reflections, allowing me to pause and observe the changes around me—a valuable skill in the ever-evolving landscape of the security business.
One particular moment that took everyone by surprise was at my mom's birthday party. As the music played, I couldn't resist the rhythm, and I found myself dancing like nobody was watching. The astonished looks on their faces were priceless—a reminder that sometimes, we surprise even ourselves.
As I return to work, I don't have all the answers. But I wouldn't be good at what I do if I wasn't a tad bit curious about what the answers, if there is a right one, are.
In the world of cybersecurity, curiosity is a powerful tool. It fuels our exploration of new threats, motivates us to learn from past incidents, and drives our adaptation to the ever-changing digital landscape. It's the curiosity that keeps us innovating, evolving, and staying one step ahead.
In the end, life is an ever-evolving canvas, and it's up to us to embrace the colors, the layers, and the surprises it brings. Just as a painter repents and changes their mind to reveal hidden beauty, we, too, must adapt, reflect, and seek fresh perspectives.
Here's to a summer of balance, family, renewal, and the art of reflection.
As for me, I've been in my head this summer, and this is just a snippet of the rambling. Nonetheless, my son has been asking if I'm back in the saddle, and I suppose I am. Anywho, just some musings for a Monday.
