NMPA, NSAI and DiMA hail Histroic Agreement Setting Mechanical Rates for 2033-2027?

The new agreement, according to the parties, will provide “higher royalty rates for songwriters and music publishers, promote sustainability, innovation, and continued investment for the entire industry, and usher in a new era of collaboration between all parties.”?

Initially, the NMPA’s CRB IV proposal consisted of a greater formula of four parts, including: 20% percentage of revenue; or 40% of what record labels and artists receive; or $1.50 per subscriber; or $0.0015 per play. It is not certain which other pieces from the proposal will be part of the settlement.?

Senators?Introduce American Music Fairness?Act, Which Would Require Radio to Pay Royalties to Musicians?

This legislation will positively impact artists and the music industry at large by:?

  • Requiring terrestrial radio broadcasters to pay royalties to American music creators when they play their songs.
  • Protecting small and local stations who qualify for exemptions — specifically those that?fall under $1.5 million in annual revenue and whose parent companies fall under less than $10 million in annual revenue overall — by allowing them to play unlimited music for less than $500 annually.??
  • Creating a fair global market that ensures foreign countries pay U.S. artists for the use of their songs overseas.”?

Youtube Reduces Length of Copyright Dispute Process?

YouTube is shortening the time that claimants have to review copyright appeals from 30 days to seven days. Note that claimants continue to have 30 days to review the initial dispute; YouTube is only shortening the appeal to seven days. For claims blocking viewers from seeing your video, you’ll now have the option to skip the initial dispute step and go straight to the appeal stage. YouTube calls this the escalate to appeal option. YouTube is introducing the escalate to appeal option to offer creators a way to reduce the impact of potentially false claims blocking their videos. (Video Explainer)?

European Commission Launches A Call For Evidence on the Remumeration of Sound Recordings from Non-EU Countries?

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence on the issue of remuneration of music performers and record producers (as in owners of rights to sound recordings) from third, non-EU countries for recorded music played in the EU.?

“The aim is to clarify certain conditions and ensure legal certainty on the remuneration of music performers and record producers from third countries when their records are played in the EU on radio or TV, or in public places such as bars and restaurants,” said the Commission.?

SoundExchange distributes $230.4 million in Neighburing Rights Royalties?

US music rights society SoundExchange has distributed $230.4 million in neighbouring rights royalties to creators in the second quarter of 2022, bringing to $464.9m the amount of royalties distributed to its performers and owners of sound recordings membership during the first half of the year. SoundExchange administer the Section 114 sound recording license which applies to the use of sound recordings by non-interactive digital services such as SiriusXM, iHeart Radio and Pandora, among others, Since its launch in 2003, SoundExchange has distributed more than $9 billion directly to 570,000 music creators. “We’ve seen the return of a vibrant music community in 2022, and SoundExchange will continue to work to make the business of music easier for creators to receive payment for their artistic contributions,” said the company in a statement.?

The MLC Introduces Catalog Export Feature

The MLC released a new feature enabling members to export their catalog on-demand. With this feature The MLC members can export into an Excel or CSV file the musical works data for all of your works or a subset of those works using existing search functions.
