Just over five years ago as Chief IP Counsel of the House of Representatives, I walked the draft text of the Music Modernization Act down to the House bill clerk on the House floor for its formal introduction, like I had done numerous times before for other bills. In return, I received the standard bill number card from the House Bill Clerk.

Over $1 billion in distributed royalties later, the House Judiciary Committee just held its 5-year anniversary hearing in Nashville. This little bill number card that cost less than a penny to make resulted in way more than it was worth in returns! And it was five years to the day that the bill passed the House that I started at Michael Best.
