Music from childhood or how we revived track from Battle Realms
Briefly about the game
Battle Realms is my childhood game. This project was released in 2001, six months before Warcraft 3. That was the heyday of RTS. The setting of the game can be roughly attributed to Sengoku jidai, the era of the warring provinces in Japan in the 16th century.
There are 4 clans in the game: Dragon, Serpent, Lotus and Wolf. Each faction has its own philosophy and origin. You can read more about the game's lore here.
Music in Battle Realms skillfully reveals the essence of each clan. We will talk about the Dragon - Better days. The music of the Dragon personifies the bright beginning. The main qualities of the Dragon warriors are nobility and adherence to traditions. The name Better Days (Better days) contains the meaning of dreams of a brighter future under the cover of the Dragon.
Our team Music we Deserve recreated this track from scratch. I'll tell you how we did it.
Stage 1: Strings Decide
There will be no music without strings! This section is the foundation of the entire track. You need good sound and live dynamics. Without these components, you can not even start. That's why we paid special attention to the string section.
Let's start with the microphone setup. In the stock value, we are given one position - the conductor's console.

In most cases, this is enough. The conductor's stand is considered the most balanced in sound. But this is not enough for us. Let's unleash the possibilities!
This approach pumps the sound of strings. We get: fat sound, fullness in space, clear articulation
Now let's make the soulless machine sound real. To do this, we add breathing to the instruments or, scientifically, dynamic differences. We prescribe the parameters of dynamics, expression and vibrato.
It's like a roller coaster, that's what we want! The original strings have a wide dynamic range. We are trying to repeat.
