Music changes your attitude and your approach to daily life or a challenging task!
Some days it’s just hard to get out of bed.....
Sometimes there’s a task ahead that is so challenging or boring that we don’t even begin, instead we procrastinate. We do something else or nothing at all.
The other day I had one of these mornings. The sky was grey, the bedroom was cold and I did not have anything to do that I was looking forward to that day. Why even bother to get out of bed, I thought. With the body slightly bended forward, with the shoulders and head hanging, I got out of bed. Doing al the morning tasks in slow motion and with no smile on my face. With a deep sigh I put myself in front of the computer to do some administration tasks that I did not look forward to do.
My headset from yesterdays Skype coaching was right next to the computer so I thought I try to find some music to listen to. I choose a playlist called Sweden top 50 and pressed play. My fingers slowly started to press the computer keys working my way to the excel worksheets. Then suddenly I felt myself smiling and straiten my back. My upper body starts moving from side to side and then my left foot starts tapping to the beat. The song that was playing was “Think about things” with Dadi Freyer, representing Islands in Eurovision song contest 2020. It just makes me want to move and it makes me smile. Suddenly the boring work did not feel so boring anymore.
Of course! Music can change my mood in an instant. How could I forget that?
I remember when I was a teenager I used songs to comfort me, to bring me to peace, back then it was usually songs about heartbreak or not daring to show how I feel.
I can do the seam to create other feelings. I can put together a list of songs that creates the feelings and attitude I like for different situations and in that way change my approach to them. Of cores! That’s what I need to do!
As a psychological coach I work with feelings, body posture, thoughts and actions. Music actually is al of them at ones. You can change how you feel by changing your body, your thoughts and your actions. For example: stand straight, shoulders back and put your hands straight up in the air like you just won a big competition. With that body posture it's quiet hard to feel worthless. So feelings is possible to change!
This I my changing attitude and get going songs that fills me with what’s important for me right now:
Think about things, Dadi Freyer. The music makes me happy and wanting to dance. It simply lifts my mood up. Then the lyrics reminds me to take time to listen to my kids. Really listen. The lyric is about how he is longing for his little daughter to be older so she can tell him what she think about things.
Be Nice, Black Eyed Peas. Whens social media and the world fills up with hatred and people pointing fingers this song keeps me focused on what I think its important and make me to dare to be different.
Lev nu d? sen, Miss Li (live life now, die later on). This Swedish song is originally by a rapper called Petter. Miss Li, from my hometown, did a version of it that I listen to a lot. Singing along make me feel the word in its fullest power. Part of the lyrics: “ I am giving thanks to life and race my glass, I do not take anything for granted, baby it’s me and you. I am giving thanks to life and no one can stop me because you never get to live any day again. Live life now, die later on” This song creates in me gratefulness for here and now.
B?rjan p? allt, Petter (The start of it all). Song by the Swedish rapper, Petter. It’s about waking up every ordinary morning and realise this is the start of it all, its an new day, a new beginning. Part of the lyrics: “ This morning is the start of I all, I can feel it in every breath, this morning is the start of it al, I walk in pace with my heartbeat… we can se a new day coming, it is the start of all. This song make me realise I can my self choose to make the best out of every day and to live life fully from my hart with every heartbeat! With that great energetic powerful feeling I can conquer the word with a smile on my face!
What would you have on your list? In what situations could a song or some music make a difference for you?

4 年Thanks for sharing Terés. I think many of us have mornings like this especially in these turbulent times. When I play Airplanes with Local Natives anything is possible:-)
