A Mushrooming Burb

A Mushrooming Burb

Another frosty morning arrived, and in spite of thinking I'd dressed appropriately, I soon found it too chilly for my liking, but thankfully I had extra clothes at office which allowed for an extra layer. It seems to happen every year where there's a good two weeks of suffering the cold before I become acclimated to it. In spite of the the furnace at my office being set at its normal temp, it still felt cold.

Once I had all my real estate calls and emails returned, I headed out to run a few errands before the traffic grew heavy, and while out, I couldn't help noticing and of course hearing the pounding away of big machinery in that parking lot behind Brick Furniture where they were methodically breaking up the concrete of that parking lot and hauling it away. I also noticed they'd excavated several holes at the curbside to install water and sewer lines. I still think it's a crying shame that parking lot will no longer be used by the general public, along with the loss of income from those surrounding businesses.

As much as our city 'fathers' think they're turning our Downtown into an artsie-fartsie mecca which'll be drawing in carloads of clients and customers, they're sadly mistaken because there'll soon to be no parking, and if someone has to park blocks away in those seedy blocks surrounding our downtown, they'll keep right on driving. Some years ago I was warned that our city wasn't keen on taking care of all the parking lots, and in time, they'd find a way to diminish their numbers, and so, it is now coming to pass.

The suspicions I've also had about the difficulty in selling buildings downtown, has also been confirmed with the number of interested lookers we've had on 118 N. Federal, and since I'm definitely not the one who can determine what the city allows and and what it doesn't, I simply point those interested parties in the direction of our city's Community Development office. I have no idea what they're being told, but I do know they're very much inclined to follow their code rules to the 'T', and you can be certain there's a strict enforcement.

I also know they're pushing hard on the 'sprinkling' of what looks to be just about everything that's got a roof over it in our downtown. With that said, it's no wonder commerce in Clear Lake is rapidly expanding. Like I've said, some believe we're living in a mushrooming burb of a hot metro area, which brings to mind, my having mentioned a grandmother's old saying whenever she'd encounter someone who 'thought' they were something very special when saying, “For them it's better be a big duck in a little pond, rather than a little duck in a big one.” There've been times, when those in 'authority' would mention something that sounded like it was coming from the most learned person in the world, which would cause me to simply keep quiet while listening to grandmother's words in my mind. Yes, that's always helped whenever struggling to understand the mindsets of those who're supposed to be steering our city's boat.

With some free time, I went back into my storage room and started cleaning up some additional vintage mid-century furniture which I'll be gifting to a family that's more than willing to receive it. After I get that nine-drawer mid-century dresser pulled into view, I'm sure they'll want that as well. When looking more closely at it, whatever company made it, pulled out all the stops because its construction is all hardwood and covered with a rich walnut veneer. I dare say it's one of the rare ones, and only because it has nine drawers instead of the customary six. If they don't want the beveled mirror that goes with it, I'll likely re-purpose it for my own use.

Having reviewed the closed sales of these past two weeks, I dare say in my estimation, there've a noticeable number of 'lipsticks' which were over-sold, but unfortunately nearly all of my un-sold and active office listings are more reasonably priced, so now I'm putting it out there even more for them to get under contract. If you'd be so kind, please put the word out on the following properties:

1. 236 – 21st SE

2. 113 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs

3. 933 N. Polk

4. 418 - 20th SW

5. 5256 Lakeview Dr. in Clear Lake

I'm confident they'll all get sold, but I'd rather have them gone more sooner than later. Oh, and please don't forget about that acre of land with a house and building on it that's one block from Newman School with the address of 2708 - 19th SW.

Tonight's One-liner is: Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully, as when they do it from religious conviction.
