Is muscle memory stopping your business growth?

One reason that our business’ don’t grow is because of muscle memory.

Have you developed muscle memory in your business? In sport, through training and repetition you can develop greater skill through muscle memory. This same principle can apply to poor performance. If you are not taught how to do thing properly, you can develop bad muscle memory?

Something I am discovering as I work with business owners is that they do develop muscle memory.?We do this through the way we have done things or the experiences we have had.?We bring these points in our history through to the way we think about the future.?Have you heard the statement, “We have always done it that way”. Muscle memory.

One of the things about muscle memory is that it can serve to create good or bad business culture. This is where toxic work places can establish.

In so many societies, we erect monuments to the people or things that have historic significance. For us in Australia, statues of royalty or sporting heroes. One of the things I love most it walking along ANZAC Parade in Canberra (the city where I live) I love to look at the monuments to the significant sacrifice made during service in the military.

Today I want to challenge you about the business memories and monuments that you have built.?Firstly, are they just in your head.?Where new staff can’t associate with the growth and direction the business has travelled prior to their arrival. In the absence of these memories and monuments, people will establish their own stories.?Over time, this changes the culture.?

Can I challenge you, no matter how big or small your business, develop the monuments of success so that the next generation can look and learn from the stories and be more aligned with the culture that you are growing.?

There is a great story in the bible that illustrates this principle.

2“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,?3and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan from right where the priests stood and to carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.” … Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites,?6to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?'?7tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. … These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”?Joshua 4:2-7 (NIV)?

So, what monuments or memorials are you building in your business??Are they of good memories? Are they available for the future generations (new staff) to look at and learn from??You set the culture of your business.?Consider, Is it a good culture? Is it able to grow with you as your business grows.

I firmly believe in the impact that transformed thinking can have in business.?

Making Business Change a Success

What a great challenge. I have been to two successive meetings in the last week to be told, - we do't do things that way. I ask the question - how successful have you been - the answer varies from: well its a difficult market, to we are making a profit so it must be good. No one ever asks - do you have another suggestion and what should we expect as an outcome. Safety in business in the UK us a National Characteristic. What about other countries - how doses this theme affect you?
