Murtaugh invited to rewrite TBI guidelines
Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals
At Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, we combine heartfelt hospitality with unmatched innovation and education.
Brain injury program leader and occupational therapist Brooke Murtaugh has joined a panel of leading experts dedicated to rewriting and revising trauma guidelines on how best to care for traumatic brain injury patients. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) invited Brooke to participate in the panel. Over the next year, she and fellow experts representing neurotrauma specialties will work closely with the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Programs (TQIP) Best Practices Project Team to create the updated Guidelines. ACS TQIP provides quality assessment and benchmarking of Level 1 and 2 trauma centers across the country to improve patient outcomes.
The aim of the ACS TQIP Best Practices Guidelines is to provide evidence-based recommendations for how best to manage TBI patients with special consideration to trauma care providers. Consensus from the group is used when evidence-based information is lacking.
?“I am excited and extremely humbled to be chosen for the panel," Brooke said. "This is a tremendous opportunity to represent Madonna and the great work we do on a national level and to provide evidence-based recommendation on the important role rehabilitation plays in the recovery of brain injury survivors and their families."
?Brooke has served as the brain injury program manager since 2015 and has worked at Madonna since 2006. She has helped develop and improve Madonna’s Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) services for survivors of severe brain injury. She is a member of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine’s DoC Task Force and co-chairs the Neurocritical Care Society’s Curing Coma Campaigns Care for the Coma Patient international work group and service on the Curing Coma Campaign’s scientific steering committee.?
