The Murie Ranch, A Legacy Of Protecting Wilderness
“I’m counting on the new generation coming up. I have to believe in their spirit, as those who came before me believed in mine.”- Mardy Murie
For anyone who visits the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks and is passionate about the history of the conservation movement in America, I recommend you stop by the Murie Ranch in Wyoming to learn more about Margaret (Mardy) and Olaus Murie.??The Murie’s were?American naturalists, conservationists, and writers who were central contributors in efforts to establish The Alaska Wildlife Refuge and pass the Wilderness Act of 1964.??Which earned Margaret Murie the title of the "grandmother of the conservation?movement."?
This year I had the honor to be awarded the 2021 Murie Ranch Spirit of Conservation Award and to choose a rising leader.??I chose Robbie Bond, who started Kids Speak For Parks when he was ten years old, to encourage young people to have a voice in protecting our National Parks.???I am grateful to former Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell and the Honorable Al Gore for being part of the tribute.
The Teton Science School carries on the Murie legacy of science, curiosity and place-based learning.??To support the ranch and Teton Science School go to: https://www.tetonscience.org/locations/murie-ranch/

3 年If you visit a wilderness area, then you will know that it is a place that has been set aside for all people to enjoy. But is there more to it than just nature walking trails and beaches? In fact, there is a lot of work behind the scenes from political lobbying to help ensure our national parks have protected management policies. Protecting areas from development means they are here for us and future generations to enjoy. Rose Marcario wonderful post!

3 年Synchronicity! The Conservation Lands Foundation Board is holding our first in-person meeting/retreat here at the Teton Science Schools today! And we have a tour of the Murie Ranch planned for tomorrow afternoon. It feels good to be in this cradle of conservation and thank you for nominating the next generation - so very important!
Thank you , Rose, for your inspiring conversation with Judge Margaret McKeown during the Murie Spirit of Conservation Award event. The role and leadership in conservation in business and every organization is critical, essential in our time.
