Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 Phase 1 Set to Commence Operations in July

Mumbai’s transportation landscape is set for a significant upgrade as Phase 1 of the Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, gears up for operations starting in July. This new underground metro route, stretching from Aarey to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), is poised to revolutionize connectivity across the bustling city.

Ready for Launch

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) has successfully completed the necessary dry runs and is now in the final stages of assessments and approvals. Once operational, MMRCL plans to deploy over 260 services utilizing a fleet of 19 state-of-the-art trains on this route.

Projected Impact

Upon full operation, Metro Line 3 is expected to accommodate approximately 1.7 million passengers daily. With trains running every three to four minutes, each carrying about 2,500 passengers, this line will transform Mumbai’s public transportation system. As the city’s only completely underground metro, it promises a faster, more efficient travel option for daily commuters.

Route Map and Connectivity

The first phase of the 12-kilometer-long Metro 3 underground corridor will connect key locations from Aarey to BKC. This route will link six major employment and business hubs: Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Lower Parel, BKC, and SEEPZ/MIDC.

In addition to business centers, the metro line will provide access to over thirty educational institutions, fourteen religious sites, thirteen hospitals, and more than thirty recreational facilities. This enhanced connectivity will particularly benefit underserved areas such as Kalbadevi, Girgaon, and Worli.

The stations along this line include:

Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CSMT, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Shitladevi, Dharavi, BKC, Vidyanagri, Santa Cruz, CSIA Terminal 1 (Domestic Airport), Sahar Road, CSIA Terminal 2 (International Airport), Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ, Aarey Colony (the only at-grade station)

Anticipated Benefits

The new metro line is expected to alleviate congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a more sustainable and efficient mode of transportation for Mumbai’s residents. Enhanced connectivity to various parts of the city will facilitate easier commutes, bolster economic activities, and improve the overall quality of life for many Mumbaikars.

As the city eagerly anticipates the launch of this significant infrastructure project, the Aqua Line is poised to be a game-changer in Mumbai’s transit landscape, paving the way for a greener and more connected future.
