Mum As The OG Entrepreneur

Mum As The OG Entrepreneur

When you ask a class of Prep students the question, "Who's creative?", 99% of their hands will go up. When you ask a class of Year 7 students the same question, less than 10% of their hands go up. We define creativity as being bold and imaginative and not limiting your thinking to what’s already done. Do students become less creative as they get older??

If you ask a Mum the question, "Are you an entrepreneur?", what percentage do you think would raise their hands? If we set aside the male-centric, individualistic stereotype of what an entrepreneur looks like it, is very easy to draw the parallels between Mother and Entrepreneur.?The truth is that being a mum and rasing a family is more similar to running a startup than most people would realise.?

The list of skills that transfer from motherhood into startup life is longer than you might think. Let's examine three.

  1. Resourcefulness. Mums live in the wild west. There are no handy instruction guides or starter-kits for raising children.?Mums learn very quickly how to “do more with less,” and find ingenious solutions to problems based on whatever is available.?
  2. Persistence & Grit. Mum's are experts at putting out fires—a temper tantrum in the grocery store and three kids kicking and screaming. Every moment of every day it is something new. And mum's don't quit. They find solutions to the problems and manage to get through the day or the night.?They keep showing up, finding solutions, and putting out fires.
  3. Pitching. Which is harder: Selling a stubborn kid on the fact that eating his veggies is actually a fun game, or selling a big enterprise client on signing a contract with your company? Mums are always in sales mode and under constant pressure to inspire, motivate and entertain. They are true masters of negotiation and sales.?

Mums helped to create the entrepreneur mould. Studies?by the Kauffman Foundation have shown that venture-backed companies led by a woman create 12 percent more revenue. Also, women-led companies are proven to be more resilient to financial and market crises.

Sometimes we forget what we do. And sometimes we forget how valuable what others do is.

Thank You to all the Mum's out there!
