?? To Multitask or Not to Multitask? Busting the Multitasking Myth

By Nourane Khaled

In today’s fast-paced world, multitasking is often marketed as a must-have skill for productivity.

But does juggling multiple tasks really help us work better or faster? As someone who has felt the urge to multitask, I’ve learned the hard way: multitasking often leads to more stress and less success.

Here’s why sticking to one task at a time may be your best productivity hack??

1. Multitasking Dilutes Focus:

When you’re splitting your attention across tasks, none get your full focus. Each switch divides your mental energy, often resulting in a diluted, less thorough approach. ??

2. The Learning Trap

Tackling many tasks may feel like you're mastering new skills, but in reality, it limits deep learning. ?? Each task will suffer from a surface-level effort, which can leave you with gaps in knowledge or understanding. 3. The Perfectionist’s Dilemma ??

For perfectionists, multitasking is especially challenging. The urge to do each task perfectly often leads to burnout when those tasks pile up. ?? You might think handling multiple tasks made you more efficient, but instead, it just increased your stress.

4. Raising the Bar for Yourself ??

Each time you successfully juggle more tasks, the expectations go up. It’s easy to set the bar higher and higher...until it’s unsustainable. Inevitably, we all have our "off" days—yet with multitasking, those days can be brutal as unmet expectations fuel frustration and burnout. ??

5. They Tell You to Multitask...But Do They? ??

Ever noticed that the people encouraging multitasking are rarely juggling tasks themselves? ?? You might always get that advice of embracing multitasking to get more done, but it’s rarely the solution high performers apply when they need to produce high-quality work.

6. Long-term Impact: Burnout ??

Over time, multitasking takes its toll. Instead of fostering resilience, it drains your mental resources. Burnout doesn’t happen overnight; it creeps up as the long-term consequence of constantly pushing yourself to do more with less.

Takeaway Message: Choose Quality Over Quantity

Multitasking may seem productive at first, but it’s often unsustainable. Focusing on one thing at a time isn’t just easier; it’s also a way to ensure quality, learn deeply, and protect your mental well-being.

So, next time you feel the urge to multitask, remember you’re more than capable of getting everything done — one task at a time. ??
