What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system (CNS); the brain and spinal cord. MS is thought to be an autoimmune disorder, which means an individual’s own immune system attacks the healthy cells. In MS, the immune system attacks the healthy cells of the brain and spinal cord which results in nerve damage. The damaged nerve disrupts communication between the brain and the body causing symptoms such as vision loss, mood changes, pain, numbness, fatigue, tingling, impaired coordination, memory problems, and even paralysis. Those diagnosed with MS can have different experiences, no one has the same MS experience. Symptoms can be permanent or they may come and go. If you or a loved one has been newly diagnosed, you may not know where to begin. You are not alone.
