Multicast over a Cisco SD-WAN

Multicasting video streams over software defined LANs is now fairly easy to achieve, however getting multicast to work over a software defined WAN presents a lot more obstacles. The Frame Group has been working recently with one of our government agency clients and Cisco to achieve this. We came across many hurdles such as aligning multicast packet structures with the underlaying carriage standards, fine tuning IGMP, the usual firmware mismatches, and overcoming several forwarding plane issues.

However in the end we got there and our client is now able to multicast CCTV video streams to their security operations centre.

We believe this is the first successful production use case of multicast over a Cisco SD-WAN in the world. Unless anybody knows of somewhere else that’s done it. Love to hear about it if you know. Perhaps our engineering teams could swap notes?
