The Multi-talented Ebele (Omenka Ulonka) Okoye.
This week's WCW in animation, we feature the multi-talented Ebele Okoye (born 6 October 1969, Onitsha, Anambra State), Nigerian-American painter and animator based in Cologne, Germany.
Ebele Okoye grew up in southeastern Nigeria where, like many African filmmakers, oral storytelling was the collective experience of the society. From this humble background she yearned to share these stories, recounted around the fire, under the moonlight, and it was through the medium of animation filmmaking that she fulfilled that dream.
When she was venturing out onto the animation industry the film industry in Nigeria was not that robust, thus she went to, the International Film School in Cologne, Germany to study 2D Cartoon Animation. After graduating, she worked as a studio animator and director/producer of her own short films. Amongst her legendary works are the likes of (For The Legacy of Rubies -2015) which is a project she collaborated on with the Nigerian animation production studio Shrinkfish Ltd, who are the producers of the film. The same film, won her the animation laurel category at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF). To add to her endless feats, Okoye, has also won the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) prize, 2008 for her film, The Lunatic. Besides being an Oscar Quali festival jurist amongst others feats.
