Hello all,

Wishing you all a wonderful Friday and a great weekend. It's an odd time for me currently as my KTP role draws to a close. I've always felt quite emotional at the end of projects. Maybe this is just not liking to say goodbye or just that I become very absorbed in my work. My professional career thus far has been hugely shaped by my time at the University of Leeds and now Coventry University. Staying at the same place may be comfortable but change is good both professionally and personally and I am looking forward to my new role.

Research highlights: Highly cited

Though the deposition of a single material as a coating does appear elegant, multi-layers allow for the optimisation of internal stress or brittleness while maintaining high hardness. Nitride films derived from transition or refractory metals possess excellent properties. A particularly promising multi-layer system is explored in "Superhard CrN/MoN coatings with multilayer architecture" by Pogrebnjak et al.

Tribology Resources: Educational Video

We've all seen the videos of two machined parts with impossibly thin cuts and impeccable tolerances. Wire EDM is the manufacturing method responsible. Learn more about how this is achieved with the video below from Steve Mould.

Interesting Infographics

Have you ever wondered what the average person does in a day? Perhaps you're someone who works from home and wonders what a commuting day is like. Nathan Yau from Flowing Data collected data from thousands of Americans in 2014 and compiled a time-varying Markov chain. I wonder how different it is almost 10 years on. View the animated version of this infographic and break down by time here.

From our Partner

JCC provide a range of services including:

  • Wear-resistant ceramic coatings and nitriding processes developed with sustainable development in mind. These processes give a hardened surface for cutting tools and stamping dies to improve tool duration and reduce energy consumption.
  • Protective thin films for the semiconductor industry the purpose of protecting electrical devices against electrostatic discharge damage by using slow discharge film. These thin films also eliminate nano circuit defects caused by wear particulates and reduce wear induced by corrosion.

Notable and quotable

"I think that everybody needs to find meaning in life. I was hoping to do something that serves the needs of society." - John B. Goodenough

What we’re reading

When talking about ceramic coatings, many in the surface engineering community (myself included) think primarily of ceramic coatings only in terms of physical or chemical vapour deposition. Thermal spray is also an excellent technique for the deposition of these coatings as detailed in this article from HTS Coatings.

The lighter side of the internet

Over the past couple of years, I've grown to enjoy cycling and now it's my main way of getting into work. As with all hobbies, we all look for fun things on the internet and I found Velocipedia. It's a collection of hand-drawn images of bikes showing that, in general, no one knows what a bike really looks like!
