Mulligan
In previous Back to the Basic, you may have noticed 'mulligan' at the end of your reading. It means 'an extra stroke allowed after a poor shot, not counted on the scorecard'. Widely used for golfers.
Mulligan is basically, a second chance.
Well, not only golfers need that, we do too.
We go through various events in our workplace that we know we can do it differently and better the second time. But somehow, we repetitively reacting the same way we did, with the same intellect, same perspective. For some, the response-ability is far different. Simply efficient and able to handle hard-pressing circumstances calmly. Why is that?
In any circumstances, there is a gap of time and space between 'the event' and 'the response to that event'. The gap allows retrieval of available resources to suggest the best possible responses.
In this context, the individual competency set-up adequately encompassing past episode storage, relevant information to the subject, up-to-date skill set and the ability to translate them into a production of the most applicable and practical action and reaction.
This single skill, if we master it, remarkably helps in handling any given situation. Imagine to never again panic when we are facing our client, bosses and shareholders.
The best news is, all skills are learnable. If you can learn how to ride a bicycle, you can learn this too. From now on, try doing this:
- Do not neglect negligible error let alone the significant.
- Activate your alert and observatory sensor. Recognize the expectation.
- Upgrade your skill and experience them by applying what have been learnt.
For example, it can be an e-mail, presentation to client, report to board of directors or as critical as running a business. These occurrence, responses and lesson on each are compounded waiting to be retrieved to help us responding in a better deal next time.
You need to calibrate to the way you look at things by changing your behavior towards your roles, desires, expectation, the happenings and reaction of others. If you care enough, how do you, react to the same happening, differently.
