A Much Better Question To Ask Than "Introvert or Extrovert?"

Video transcript: Hi, this is Bruce Kasanoff with another Mountain Minute, helping you help your career by helping other people.

So how long has it been since someone asked you whether you were an introvert or an extrovert? It really comes down to... where do you get energy from? Being alone or being with other people?

I actually would like to suggest that this might be the wrong question. A better question is:

do you get energy from helping yourself or from helping other people?

And the best answer of all is... kind of in the middle, that you get energy helping other people, but you are able to keep in mind your own goals and you are able to do both at the same time. That is, that you understand that by consistently helping other people, you are really helping yourself.

That assumes you are able to state clearly to people what it is that you do best. You combine those things, and you have a magical life. Thanks for listening.

A bit more background:

It's hard to fake being a giver. It either gives you genuine pleasure to help others, or it doesn't. (I know a few folks who claim to be givers, and pretty much everyone else sees through them.)

But there are a lot of people who are on the fence, and maybe you are one of them? You get energy from helping others, but you worry that doing this amounts to a distraction from putting your nose to the grindstone and making money, closing deals, etc.

The key to doing both is to have clarity around your skills and objectives. For example, when you help others, use your best skills. Make it clear how and when you can help, and be sure to include things for which you get paid. Don't sell, but make it easy to understand what others can "buy" from you.

If you truly get energy from helping others, then this needs to be a central part of your daily existence... otherwise you won't generate enough energy.

I'm glad that you brought this topic to an awareness that I never considered before, but is thought provoking nonetheless. I began my career as an analysis of of premiums of a large insurance company. I was painfully introverted and very much sought solitude. I was confronted by a father figure gentlemen who was genuinely concerned about my gravitation towards an aloneness that was disturbing of someone who was perceived as too young to carry this trait. I got great energy from my aloneness resulting in a very contemplative life. I didn't put myself out there to help anyone else in developing their ability to shine and become a giver in their own journey. Thus, I was a painfully obvious introvert. Fast forward to today. I am a wonderfully compassionate giver. That is my entire focus for each day. I am an advocate for children and the vulnerable in life. I am deeply involved with people who need someone to walk with them during a difficult time in their journey. However, I believe, perhaps falsely, that part of my energy comes from the time I return home, and immerse myself in deep contemplation and sort out the events of the day to regain focus that enables me the clarity needed to stay on course. Do I have this correctly?

I am not sure if my message will post with the first one.I ran out of space. I was a republican all of my life, but now I am independant.I love everyone,I may not agree with others,or like, exept how another chooses their words, even in times of hostility. My father was in the army when I was growing up,we had to re-locate every 2 years. All of my friends were african american.I didn't know the difference in our color of skin and too this day I feel the same. Do all people who have a whiter tone in their skin really believe they are pure white? Honest question.I know that the only reason for skin tone in the first place, it's because of whatever part of the world our ancestors are from.Small example-people who were in extreme Weather, extreme heat & sunlight,to below zero ice cold no sun, hence, your skin is white depending on envirement. People need to understand,in order to have all of the races & languages of the 21st century,we had to mix our skin with another, this produces a nationality. We all have one creator, and if we keep hurting each other over a skin tone we deserve to be punished.Life is short & we have choices.Once we die,it is too late To burn in hell, and that won't end,we should think of choices.
