Much Ado About AI

Much Ado About AI

The whole world is suddenly talking about Artificial Intelligence.

Most of us are familiar with Alexa AI in our kitchen and Siri on our phone. AI is already all around us, but new names like ChatGPT, Dall-E, Jasper and more feel like they’ve taken the internet by storm.

These innovative concepts push the boundaries even further, helping us write articles, search the web with natural conversation, generate images, write code, and introduce new ways to simplify our daily lives.

However, when new technology emerges, it nearly always arrives in a flurry of geek-speak before eventually becoming part of our everyday life. Early PC users might recall the "DOS prompt," but, honestly, when was the last time you needed to "defrag" your phone?

Experts predict these new AI tools will serve as the building blocks of a whole new realm of tech, reframing the way we interact with computers and machines.

So let’s help demystify some of the terms you’ll likely hear this year:

  • Starting with the basics, A Chatbot is an application that simulates human-to-human interaction. You can type or speak naturally, and the chatbot will respond in a conversational manner. ChatGPT is an example of a chatbot, and if you haven't already, it's worth giving it a try.
  • Deep Learning is the technique used to mimic the human brain by learning from data. Unlike traditional search tools and systems that rely on pre-programmed algorithms, AI tools are trained on real-world concepts and conversations, continuously learning to provide responses that resemble human-like understanding.
  • Machine Intelligence serves as an umbrella term encompassing machine learning, deep learning, and conventional algorithms. The question arises, "Will machine intelligence surpass human ingenuity?"
  • Natural Language Understanding (NLU) empowers machines to comprehend the meaning of our words, even if we make grammatical errors or speak with different regional accents.
  • Weak AI dominates, in the current landscape. It refers to AI systems that lack sentience and typically focus on specific activities, such as writing or repurposing video content. On the other hand, strong AI aims to develop systems that possess intelligence and abilities akin to the human mind, although we have yet to achieve this milestone.

This is just a brief overview that only scratches the surface, but trust me - you'll be hearing a lot more about AI in the months and years to come.
