Imagine a world where you can design and build your own factory with Lego-like modules, each with a specific function and capability. You can easily plug and play these modules into your production system, without worrying about compatibility or integration issues. You can also swap, add, or remove modules as you wish, to adapt to changing market demands, customer preferences, or environmental conditions. Sounds like a dream, right?

Well, this dream is becoming a reality, thanks to a concept called modular automation. Modular automation is an approach to automation that aims to make hardware and software more flexible, interoperable, and scalable by using standardized process modules called Module Type Packages (MTPs).

What are MTPs and how do they work?

MTPs are vendor-agnostic process descriptions of the automation procedures required for a related process module, such as a reactor, a mixer, a filter, or a dryer. They contain all the information needed to integrate the module into the primary process control architecture, such as the inputs, outputs, parameters, states, and modes of the module.

MTPs act as a common language between different modules and systems, enabling seamless communication and coordination. They also allow for easy configuration and reconfiguration of the production system, as modules can be added, removed, or replaced without affecting the overall functionality.

What are the benefits of MTPs?

MTPs bring numerous benefits to manufacturing, particularly in dynamic sectors like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and biotechnology. These advantages include faster time-to-market through rapid prototyping, lower investment costs due to shared modules, higher quality and efficiency with precise calibration, and easier scalability with adaptable modules.

MTPs also play a vital role in fostering sustainability in manufacturing. They enable customization, reducing waste and overproduction, and enhancing customer satisfaction. The "butterfly effect" allows for small changes with significant positive impacts, reducing the risk and cost of radical alterations. Moreover, MTPs contribute to a circular economy by supporting the production of regenerative products and processes, minimizing resource usage, and maximizing material reuse and recycling.

Reminds me of my college final year project for which we made a rover robot out of LEGO MINDSTORM that wirelessly travels in pipelines to identify & spot the leakages & sediments. Back then we fever knew that these LEGOs had such a potential. Great read ????????????
