Mt Buller is open, skiing and celebrating
As the sun shone at Mt Buller today on a sparkling winter's morning the Bourke Street chairlift rolled for the first day of the 2024 snow season. The mood was high as resort mascots shared sweets with the skiers who had been waiting in line since dawn.
The first day of skiing is always a source of excitement and celebration, but especially so this year at Mt Buller. Firstly, because Mt Buller resort is the only resort in Australia today with chairlifted skiing for day one of the season thanks to a huge month-long effort from the resort team to make and stockpile snow.
"We've invested steadily in snowmaking and in snow factories to give guests the guarantee of snow and the confidence to plan and book their visits," explains General Manager Noel Landry.
"The snow production started back in early May and we've been carefully stockpiling and storing this precious snow in order to deliver the great experience we see here in resort today. Children are taking their first ski lessons, snowboarders are having fun in the mini terrain park, toboggan sliding is a go and there is plenty of space for snowplay - sharing a great experience with friends in nature is what it's all about up here."
There is also an extra element of excitement in the air at Mt Buller this year as the resort marks 100 years since skiing started on the mountain. The Ski Club of Victoria led the way with their early members making a pioneering trip on foot (with the help of some locals and a few horses) to make those first turns on skis back in 1924.
Local athletes and Olympians joined the festivities today as the first chair was loaded with smiling skiers. Jakara Anthony, Belle Brockhoff and Mia Clift welcomed guests to the slopes and shared special gifts to mark the season kick off.
