So MSIX (Marketing Sciences Ideas Xchange) 2018 is over for another year. However, this year was one of the best in its short 5 year history. We had a few 'keynotes' dotted throughout the day, but I thought I'd take you through a few of my highlights:
- Eaon Pritchard and Don Marti talking about the death of advertising and the over-reliance on personalisation of communications. Was both entertaining and enlightening. Basically without the 'pay and spray' media approach of broadcast, and the signalling opportunities of ensuring that you know other people are seeing ads just like this the question remains - how do brands grow. A very nice off trend presentation.
- A combination of Karen Nelson and Field and Ted Horton told us to make the logo bigger, get the logo right up front, prime people with your brand (if it's good enough for a movie, book, TV show, then it's good enough for an ad) and if you're going to have a musical sting do it at the beginning of your communications not at the end.
- The couple from Punkee for being so young, smart and spunkee.
- The 'official key note 'Wiemer Snijders and his religious zeal for the negative binomial distributions (NBD) made famous in marketing by the Ehernberg Bass Institute. He collated and edited the book 'Eat Your Greens: Fact Based Thinking To Improve Your Brands Health
- Hearing from Julian Cress and his thinking behind mega behavioural change TV show The Block, and that it was going to be called Blockheads. One in ten people who watch the show have applied to be on the show - creating extremely strong stickiness.
There were other highlights too, and the day was filled with positive interactions. We managed to get Tooheys New, and Guzman and Gomez to deliver beers and nachos for free. NinePowered, Fairfax, and Ooh Media were brilliant sponsors, and Mumbrella know how to do events.
Thanks everyone who got involved, and of course more than open for suggestions on how to improve it next year.
