MSC, the world's largest liner company, reached an agreement with new era shipbuilding to build 14 LNG powered dual fuel new Panamax container ships.
It is reported that the total value of these new ships will exceed US $1.68 billion. In other words, the cost of each ship is $120 million and will be equipped with type B storage tanks. It is worth mentioning that the new ship order does not include alternative orders.
According to shipbuilding sources, new era shipbuilding is one of the three shipyards contacted by mediterranean shipping. Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea and Qingdao Beihai heavy industries have received orders. The former expects 6 ships and the latter expects 8 ships.
MSc is the first customer of the new era. The company also built four 13000 TEU ships for chartworld shipping and seven 70000 TEU ships for Greek shipowner chartworld shipping for delivery between 2023 and 2024. Ships with a capacity of 7000-8000teu are becoming more and more popular because they can be deployed in medium-range trade routes from the Far East to the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, forcing 4000-5000teu ships currently serving this route to be eliminated.
This means that new era shipbuilding will win the largest shipbuilding contract in history. At the same time, due to the sufficient flexibility of the new Panamax container ship, the total number of orders of container owners in this subdivision ship type has also exceeded 100. In addition, according to the previous report of the shipping industry network, SESPAN, Dexiang shipping, x-press feeders, DANAOS shipping and Da Fei all ordered container ships of the same type.
According to the latest data from alcaliner, following the fact that MSC officially surpassed Maersk as the world's largest liner company on January 6, MSC has recently expanded the capacity gap between them to 100000 TEU. In the next few months, the capacity gap between the two liner giants may further expand to more than 500000 TEU.

According to the latest data of alphalineron April 19, the total operating capacity of Mediterranean Shipping reached 4351960teu, while Maersk's total capacity was 4248120teu, with a gap of 102840teu (the data does not include the latest order of this news).
