MORNING HEADLINES
According to Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. COVID-19 death toll surged to more than 21,000 over the weekend, surpassing all other countries in the world. Italy, the country previously hardest hit, is reporting 19,899 virus-related fatalities. Over 2,000 deaths were reported on Friday alone in the U.S., the largest daily increase in the country, while at least 555,371 infection cases are confirmed - given testing limitations, the number is expected to be much higher.
The hardest hit state, New York, represented 783 of those Friday deaths, with the state reporting over 188,000 infections. A prominent model from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation predicted that Friday’s death toll was the country’s peak, assessing that the U.S. will suffer approximately 61,000 deaths before the outbreak is contained around August.
