On Friday, the New York Police City Department (NYPD) released new citywide crime data that showed that in September 2020 there was a 127 percent increase in shootings and a 76 percent increase in murder incidents across NYC when compared to September 2019. Within a month span, officers documented 152 shooting incidents and 51 murders. The number of firearm-related arrests also increased 98 percent, with 607 being made, higher than any previous September since data started being collected in 1994. Since the start of 2020, there has also been a 42 percent increase in burglaries citywide. NYPD attributed the rise in crime to a multitude of factors, including socioeconomic issues arising amid the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, an increase in gang violence, and ongoing protests and civil unrest. According to reports, the NYPD has seen a near 2,500 officer reduction, which has considerably decreased monitoring and patrolling of high-crime areas. COVID-19 and its effects on public services has also had an impact on crime nationwide, wherein high population density cities have seen a rise in violent incidents.
