On Saturday, Portland police arrested over a dozen people, as protests in downtown Portland grew in size around the Multnomah County Justice Center. According to reports, a number of demonstrators defied police orders to clear the area after the protests were declared an unlawful assembly, which led to a number of altercations between protestors and police, and resulted in a number of fires being set on the sidewalk and streets. The civil unrest occurred shortly after the “Proud Boys,” listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), gathered in a rally early Saturday. Portland Governor Kate Brown declared a “state of emergency” in preparation for the rally, and counter-protests to follow; however turnout was lower than expected and there were minimal interactions between opposing protest groups. For months, Portland has become the epicenter of protest activity on the West Coast with demonstrations often growing rapidly in size and encompassing multiple blocks throughout the city. A large majority of protests have started with peaceful intentions, but sizeable gatherings along with malevolent actors that have targeted police officer have led to multiple incidents of violence and civil unrest.
