Yesterday, officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that a post published on the agency’s website was an error and did not reflect the agency’s position on how easily the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) can spread from person to person through the air. According to reports, the post was made on Friday and suggested that the agency believes the virus can remain suspended in the air and drift more than six feet, as well remain active in poorly ventilated rooms, contradicting the widely published information from the CDC that appropriate social distancing significantly decreases the chance of transmission. According to CDC officials, the post was only a draft update and did not go through the proper approval of editing before being posted online. The publication sparked widespread confusion among public health officials considering that hundreds of government ordinances and legislative guidelines have been constructed in unison with specific CDC recommendations on the spread of the COVID-19. In the past, the CDC has come under criticism for past revisions of guidance during the pandemic, however, the latest publication was confirmed to be “an accident.” The most recent revision the CDC has made in regards to COVID-19 information was that of testing guidelines, in which the CDC said "If you have been in close contact (within six feet) of a person with a COVID-19 infection for at least 15 minutes but do not have symptoms, you do not necessarily need a test unless you are a vulnerable individual, or your health care provider or State or local public health officials recommend you take one.” Previously, the CDC recommended viral testing for people with recent or suspected exposure, because of the potential for asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission. According to the most recent data, which changes frequently, the U.S. leads the world in cases with over 6.85 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and at least 200,000 deaths.
