On Saturday, U.S. federal officials intercepted an envelope, reportedly containing the poison ricin, addressed to the White House, which the Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) said they believed could be sourced to Canada. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) the envelope is currently being analyzed, and reports have shown that the substance has passed two preliminary tests for ricin; however, authorities have not released further details as an investigation is ongoing. Additionally, authorities are also reportedly assessing additional packages sent to multiple law enforcement locations in Texas that could be connected to the same sender. Ricin is a highly toxic compound that is produced by processing castor beans and comes in various forms. Currently, there remains no antidote to the poison, and if exposed, death can occur in as little as 36 hours depending on the dosage, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the past, ricin has been used multiple times in terror plots, aimed at a key political figures. In 2018, authorities arrested a 39-year-old, who admitted to attempting to send four envelopes containing ground-up castor beans to U.S. President Donald Trump and members of his administration.
