The U.S. has become the center of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with over 787,752 cases and at least 42,335 deaths, however, signs have emerged that the virus is reaching the apex of the outbreak and that infection rates are slowing in some states. Stay-at-home orders and widespread restrictions that have been imposed in most states have stifled the U.S. economy and put at least 22 million people out of work, a level of unemployment officials say not seen since the Great Depression. In response to the restrictive measures, dozens of protests against the orders have broken out nationwide vying for the reopening of local businesses. Last week in Washington State, hundreds of people gathered in the state capital, Olympia, to demand the governor relax rules restricting the economy. According to authorities, approximately 2,500 people attended the protest, making it one of the largest protests against stay-at-home orders to occur in the U.S. over the past week. Health official have warned that the protests themselves could help spread COVID-19 if demonstrators are not practicing safe social distancing. In a recent statement, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top authority on infectious diseases, warned that “resuming business too soon risked a fresh spike in infections.”
